HBO: True Detective

I've been a big fan of HBO's programming for years, and I'm very excited about their new show True Detective.  It stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson (they look like they could pass for brothers) as two detectives working on some horrific crime.  True Detective feels a bit like The Killing, but with more action and most likely a story line that will resolve in one season.  Slated for a January release, I think True Detectives is going to be amazing.  Check out the trailer below:

Btw, if you were wondering about the song used in the trailer it is Whispering by Alex Clare.  Does HBO really need two shows that start with word true?

Now You See Me: Reviewed

I love magic movies.  In my book nothing will really beat The Prestige, but I thought I'd check out Now You See Me this past weekend.  Check out the trailer and I'll get into the review.

Let me help set your expectations for this film...  It is a fun summer movie, but it is by no means life changing.  I think Hollywood has hit a point that they realize that a somewhat a workable script packed with a lot of big names will sell tickets.  This movie is a pure popcorn fun, summer movie with some decent action sequences.

What I enjoyed about the film, is almost all the tricks "feel" real.  The "explanation fairy" in Now You See Me is Morgan Freedman who explains how each trick is done later on in the film.  Quite a few plant and pay offs, and almost all of them play out well later. The team of magicians is a really nice blend of style and personalities and Woody Harelson's mentalism (hypnosis type stuff) was probably my favorite.

There are a few twists and turns that didn't play out all that well near the end.  I'll spare you the spoilers, but I feel like they tried to squeeze just a little too much out of the story.  There is an Interpol character who really does nothing the entire film, and her eventual arc felt very forced.  The rest of the film is quite entertaining, despite a few small CG hiccups and unrealistic fights.

So is this film worth a watch?  I enjoyed it, but it won't make my top ten list for the year.  If you like magic movies, I recommend a theater viewing, and if not maybe wait for this one on redbox.
