The Wire RPG Parody

College Humor has done it again with a great tribute to HBO's The Wire.  If you haven't seen it yet, be sure to catch "The Wire The Musical."  This time College Humor has made an RPG version of The Wire; it isn't playable rather it is an 8 bit retelling of the show.  I "LOL'd" throughout the whole thing, although the Warp Whistle was pretty damned funny.  Enjoy.

Southland: Meeting My Fix of Cop Dramas

I absolutely love cop dramas, and since the departure of The Shield and The Wire, I have been looking for something to fill the void.  The problem lies in the fact that The Shield and The Wire are arguably some of the best films on television in the past few years; amazing writing, solid acting, and a gritty realism you can taste.  I was sad to see both shows ago, but all good things must come to an end.

I've been close to law enforcement my entire life due to family and close friends.  I'm quick to see through the BS and know when law enforcement is being accurately portrayed.  Southland does a great job of this and I'm sure they have a few peace officer advisors on set.  Its the little things like referencing Baker to Vegas (a big law enforcement relay race) or mentioning oh dark thirty (police and military slang for really early in the morning); these colloquialisms are cop specific and show that the creators of Southland went the extra mile.

I really enjoyed the first episode and I plan on continuing with the series.  I wouldn't be so bold as to say that is better than The Wire or The Shield, but it is certainly on par with them.  It is also worth mentioning the shows use of swear words.  Because Southland airs on NBC, they are limited with what they can say (that's why cable is better), but the creators have simply chosen to BLEEP out the cussing.  I'm not sure how I feel about that... I recognize the need for realism (cops, like most people, swear) but hearing the loud bleep quickly removes that realism.  It could be worse and at least words aren't being  made up like FRACK (Battlestar I still love you).

Anywho, Southland centers around several different facets within the LAPD and most of the show is filmed on the streets of Los Angeles.  If you like LA cop dramas, I'm pretty sure you will enjoy Southland.
