HBO: True Detective

I've been a big fan of HBO's programming for years, and I'm very excited about their new show True Detective.  It stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson (they look like they could pass for brothers) as two detectives working on some horrific crime.  True Detective feels a bit like The Killing, but with more action and most likely a story line that will resolve in one season.  Slated for a January release, I think True Detectives is going to be amazing.  Check out the trailer below:

Btw, if you were wondering about the song used in the trailer it is Whispering by Alex Clare.  Does HBO really need two shows that start with word true?

Bernie: The Best Jack Black Movie You've Never Seen

It is rare I get to see a movie in theaters that isn't highly promoted.  I recently heard about a movie called Bernie starring Jack Black, Matthew McConaughey, and Shirley McClaine and despite the big names I saw no commercials or trailers for the film.  Check out the trailer and I'll get into the review.

Bernie has a unique way of telling the story... It mixes real life interviews from the people of East Texas with rest of the regular movie.  I'm not a big Jack Black fan, and Pick of Destiny might be one of the worst films I've ever seen.  Suprisingly, Bernie is without a doubt the best performance Jack Black has ever done.  He plays a mortician and super evangelist.  The outfits, dirty mustache, and giant gut really made his performance shine.  He really owns the role, and comes to life on screen.

When I first heard of this film I check out the synopsis on IMDB and read that the old bag got gunned down.  I thought this was kind of a big plot point to reveal, but it gets let loose in the trailer too.  This film is fairly on the nose, and there isn't too many twists and turns.  That being said, it is still a fun experience, and definitely outside the norm of the giant summer block buster.

I'd definitely recommend this film on DVD, and if you are looking for something different and thought provoking on a boring evening definitely see Bernie in theaters (if you can find it).  If you've ever been to East Texas, you'll find a special appreciation for this film.  It really makes fun of the south and the mixed in interviews, and me cracking up throughout the film.  Give Bernie a watch and let me know what you think.
