Free Goo, L4D Mario, Arabic Duck Tales

Hey kids, I've got all kinds of goodies to share today.

I heard a rumor that World of Goo was pulling a RadioHead, and giving you the option of paying however much you wish for the game.  WOG is a fun physics based puzzle game that is definitely worth $0.35 cents (or whatever you want to shell out).  At the moment, the site is pretty wonky (overburdened from recession gamers), but I'm guess the deal is on the main page.

In case you are still trying to breath life into the original L4D before L4D2 arrives, a host of fan made maps are available.  One of the more interesting maps, is a Super Mario (N64?) chock full of infected ripe for blasting.

Things in foreign languages are always more funny.  Duck Tales in Arabic... I didn't know there was an Arabic word for Whoo Hoo! Check out German Gummi Bears, Russian Chip and Dale, and Japanese Pinky and the Brain.

Left 4 Dead: Crash Course

In preparation for Left 4 Dead 2 coming out in the next few months, the good people at Valve have released an extra bonus level called Crash Course

As you can see in the video the new level takes place after No Mercy, with the assumption the helicopter that saved you had an infected pilot.  As a bonus DLC style level, the map isn't too bad.  I'll also add that it wasn't anything great either.  It feels like just about every other map in L4D with lots of empty buildings and a hand full of shipping containers.  Empty streets filled with infected and the occasional bottle of pills or extra pistol.  Simply put, its nothing new.

There is an added achievement called Tank Stumble which consists of exploding a propane tank within the close proximity of "The Tank" and causing him to stumble.  The other newish type feature is during the finale assault before the rescue there is a generator that must be started.  It takes a few seconds and then the lights come on and the Horde follows.  You go through the typical volleys of Horde and all the specials and then after a Tank rolls through you have to restart the generator.  Why?  I have no idea, but it gives a few more seconds before the rescue vehicle comes.  Yes, the rescue vehicle looks like an ice cream truck fashioned with a cattle pusher (with evil looking teeth) and lots of weapons.

So overall is it worth it?  Well if you own a PC, download it for free through Steam; so yes, go get it now.  If you are an XBOX360 user you can pony up about $8 for the new map, and if you are a die hard fan it is worth the money (casual players, not so much so).  In all honesty this game got me playing L4D again (I haven't played in probably 5 months), and I sparked a little excitement for L4D 2.

Left 4 Dead 2: More Footage!

This past weekend San Diego hosted the annual ComiCon, which announced all sorts of sneak previews and hints about upcoming movies and video games.  One of the gems that came from the event was this new Left 4 Dead 2 in game footage.

Let's face the facts folks; if you purchased the first Left 4 Dead you'll be purchasing the sequel.  That being said, is there really a large quantity of cricket bats in New Orleans?  I suppose if I'm accepting the premise of a full on zombie outbreak I can I suspend my disbelief of melee cricket weapons.  Anywho, L4D2 is going to be epic!  The target release date is November 17, 2009.

America's Army 3: Review

Tired of playing your old boring video games?  Want a new video game paid for by your precious tax dollars?  America's Army 3 is for you!

I recently downloaded the newest America's Army 3 game via Steam.  I had played the America's Army 2, and found it to be quite a hassle.  Gigantic files that needed to be downloaded from crowded servers all over the net as well as very comprehensive training program killed the excitement of free game.  AA3 has removed the hassle downloads through the one stop shop that is Steam.  The extensive training (that included quizzes on identifying helicopters via silhouettes) is now gone, and a much more streamlined version has filled its place.

When I first opened up the game I headed over to the training sequences.  A quick run through an obstacle course pointed out there is no jump feature.  Really?  No jump? How am I supposed to break the bricks and get mushrooms and fire flowers? Instead of jump you can vault over objects not jump in the open :( AA3 did add a pretty sweet slide tackle maneuver as well as a tactical barrel roll.

After the obstacle course I moved on to the weapons training, which is about what you'd expect.  You get a few mags for practice and then qualify with the M16 and iron sights.  Targets pop up at different distances and you shoot for prone, crouch, and off hand (standing); pretty straight forward.

After the rifle qualification, you move on to heavy weapons training which consists of grenade launcher, SAW, and grenades (frag, smoke, and flash bang).  Same thing, practice then qualify and this is where I ran into some problems.  I screwed around a bit with the grenades and didn't pass the qualify.  I realized this happened and when I went to retake the test I passed with 100% but I didn't get credit for it.  I fought my way through the wonky menus and redid all the heavy weapons training for a third time with no luck.  I quit the program and called a night.

The next morning I opened my account and it said I had passed the heavy weapons qualify as well as the medical section which I had never even touched... WTF?  At this point I completed the killhouse training (shooting wooden targets and clearing rooms) and watched the cheesy chalk drawing video presentation of graduation from basic training.

Lastly, I played the multi-player, which in all honesty wasn't anything too amazing.  I was only able to try out a few maps, but I did enjoy the squad based aspect of game play which was similar to BF2.  Unlike BF2 the maps are much smaller and accomplishing a mission with squads (with team members who work together) was easily and effectively accomplished.

Is this game worth your time?  Yes, simply because you already paid for it.  It isn't nearly as good as Call of Duty or Left 4 Dead but it is okay, and a good time waster until Bioshock 2, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, and Left 4 Dead 2 come out.  If you're playing AA3 hit me up on twitter and we'll pwn some n00bs.
