American Sniper Shootout

Tracking Point has been sort of silent since Wired hacked their rifle a while back.  They are taking a trip back into the spot light with a shooting competition in Texas themed around Chris Kyle the "American Sniper."  Check out the promo video featuring Taya Kyle.

New Trailer For American Sniper With Bradley Cooper

Did you guys know a movie was being made about Chris Kyle based on his book American Sniper?  It stars Bradley Cooper and it will be directed by Clint Eastwood.  After I read the book I wasn't too sure if it would translate well to film, but I'm quite confident Clint Eastwood will do a good job.  Check out the trailer:

Wow, I think this film has a lot of potential.  What do you guys think?  The film will be on limited release Christmas Day and then the big opening a few weeks afterward.

Bradley Cooper to Play Chris Kyle in American Sniper

I was listening to Fresh Air the other day, and they were interviewing Bradley Cooper about his role in Silver Linings Playbook.  In the interview the subject of Chris Kyle came up and Bradley Cooper has in fact bought the rights to American Sniper.  Furthermore, he is actually going to play Kyle in the movie.  It is kind of hard for me to picture that after seeing Cooper in Hangover(s) and Limitless, but who knows maybe he could own the role.  I checked IMDB but there is nothing listed yet...

You can listen to the interview here, and the American Sniper part starts around 34:48.  Here is the transcript from the interview.

COOPER: I couldn't believe it. Jason Hall, who's writing the script, emailed me after it happened and then I called him right away. I was - and I couldn't - I just couldn't believe it, and I had spoken to him on the phone and we were very - we were about to dive into it. You know, the first draft was coming in this week, and Thursday I was at Walter Reed Hospital meeting with veterans who have post-traumatic stress disorder, among many other ailments, and then all of a sudden I hear this thing and I just couldn't believe it.

You know, the guy has two children and he is an advocate for putting guns back in veterans' hands. I believe that that's something that he thought was a way of therapy, and I believe the story is that the woman who was his neighbor said, can you take my son out who is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder? And he and his neighbor took him out and then the gentleman waited and then at point blank range killed him and then unloaded the rest of his magazine into the other guy and stole his car - his truck. I mean it's just unbelievable. Unbelievable.

GROSS: Are you going to go through with the movie?

COOPER: Oh, yeah. And in fact, I hope to - well, I'm actually going to meet with the writer and the producers at 3:00 p.m. today to talk about, you know, number one, what we can do for his family, and number two, how we can speed up the process and really try to make this movie, because his story, first of all, needs to be told and it's also relevant on two fronts. One, gun control, and two, the need to address this - the many soldiers that are coming back with post-traumatic stress disorder.

I mean, the thing about it is, you know, medicine has evolved to such a state that, you know, more soldiers are coming back and they're going to assimilate into the culture and if we don't address the mental state along with the physical state, you know, it's going to be a problem.

GROSS: So is your intention to play Chris Kyle or to direct the film?

COOPER: Yeah. I would play Chris Kyle. Yeah. Another reason why we have to do it soon, because I am 38, so I can't wait too long.

Chris Kyle Funeral

Yesterday was Chris Kyle's service at Cowboy stadium in Dallas.  You can see a clip of the funeral in the youtube clip below:

If you haven't already done so, be sure to check out my post about how you can donate to the Kyle family.  There is a great write up at Cold Dead Heads that speaks about Kyle's life and the service.  Here's a little snippet:

There was a lot of emotion in the air, and there were thousands of people in attendance. Everyone there seemed surreal. There was a lot of respect, people standing when the family entered, being respectful during the prayer. I've seen family memorials with less respectful behavior, but not for this man. You could see all the military and Operators within the crowd, not just down in the two sections on the field but a whole multitude of them scattered amongst the civilians. You could sense the mutual respect they all held for Chief Kyle. They listened to the stories and you could see them thinking back to experiences with their own brothers.

His friends spoke well of him about his days in high school and how he stood up to a bully and of things they did together. His teammates spoke well of him and how he was inspiring and a patriot. His friend from Craft International spoke of how he was at work, or wasn't at work when he decided to spend time with his family and how he had earned that right. He said that Kyle had spent enough time away from them. One SEAL stood up and delivered a message from the parents, a powerful and moving message. I was not the only one who shed tears at the memorial, and I did so proudly.

You can read more about Chris Kyle through his book, American Sniper.
