Gov. Brown Passes Terrible Gun Laws

Well it looks like Governor Brown took another step toward limiting the freedoms of law abiding citizens of California over the holiday weekend.  In total, he signed six bills into law including banning of bullet buttons on AR15s, having to undergo background checks for ammo, and requiring a background check for ammo sales.

The bill around ARs is going to be the tough one...  Please do your own research because I am not lawyer, but the crux is that you can have a rifle with no features or register your rifle with the state as an Assault Weapon.  If you go the AW route you won't be able to loan it out nor will you be able to will it to your heirs within the state of California.

I'll probably do a longer post on this in the near future but I wanted to give you guys something to think about in the interim.  This law won't take effect until the beginning of next year, but you'll need to decide what you are going to do with your rifles before then.

The guy that invented the bullet buttons already has a new device that he claims will be in compliance with the law.  Check out the vid below:

If you are considering the registered AW route, please check out this article, and be sure to read the comments at the bottom.  While I know this is some dark days for the state, you might be able to finally purchase and register that AK, Kriss Vector, or fully featured that AR you've always wanted.  I'm not going to call this a silver lining, but something you should at least be aware of...

Lastly, Governor Moonbeam will now be requiring background checks for ammunition sales and all magazines over 10 rounds are now illegal.  I have no doubt that CalGuns and the other organizations will fight this, but I think these bills made an uphill battle that much more difficult.

Remember folks, please abide by the laws, and be sure to do your own research.  You're going to have to make some decisions soon about what you want to do with your gear...  Also, if you were thinking about buying anything (to be registered as an AW) now is the time to do it...  You can expect rifles to be in short supply, and I wouldn't doubt it if your local gun stored will be jam packed for the next few weekends.

Great Breakdown On Joe Biden's Google Hangout

Did you catch Unlce Joe Biden's Google Hangout?  I missed it to because no one actually uses Google Plus, but you can re-watch it here.  As to be expected, Joe is woefully uninformed for a guy leading a national task force on firearms law.  Seriously Biden, can't distinguish between a clip and a magazine!  Rated RR has done a great breakdown outlining some of Country Joe's FAILs in this vid.  Enjoy

New Assault Weapons Bill On Thursday

Well, the rumors are flying and the panic is starting; a new assault weapons bill is supposed be presented to the Senate on Thursday.  This bill was created by a woman who cares nothing about any of California's real problems California's finest Diane Feinstein.  The assault weapons bill is borderline ridiculous and I don't see any chance of it passing.  Here are some of the highlights of the bill via the Washington Times:

Bans the sale, transfer, importation, or manufacturing of: 120 specifically-named firearms; certain other semiautomatic rifles, handguns, shotguns that can accept a detachable magazine and have one or more military characteristics; and semiautomatic rifles and handguns with a fixed magazine that can accept more than 10 rounds.

Strengthens the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban and various state bans by: Moving from a 2-characteristic test to a 1-characteristic test; eliminating the easy-to-remove bayonet mounts and flash suppressors from the characteristics test; and banning firearms with “thumbhole stocks” and “bullet buttons” to address attempts to “work around” prior bans.

Bans large-capacity ammunition feeding devices capable of accepting more than 10 rounds.

Protects legitimate hunters and the rights of existing gun owners by: Grandfathering weapons legally possessed on the date of enactment; exempting over 900 specifically-named weapons used for hunting or sporting purposes; and exempting antique, manually-operated, and permanently disabled weapons.

Requires that grandfathered weapons be registered under the National Firearms Act, to include: Background check of owner and any transferee; type and serial number of the firearm; positive identification, including photograph and fingerprint; certification from local law enforcement of identity and that possession would not violate State or local law; and dedicated funding for ATF to implement registration.

Feinstein, seriously?  Just in case you missed it, check out this great vid above that shows how Feinstein feels she needs the right to own a gun, but you certainly don't.  What a hypocrite...  This bill could maybe pass in New York, but not across the nation.  There are still decision makers in this country that are worried about solving problems that actually matter, and there is no way they would let this crap fly.  Once again, no reason to fear, but stay vigilant and be sure to contact your Congressman. Also be sure to share and check out the link AssaultWeapon.info which is a great primer for how this whole ban is complete BS.

Stop The Fear And Educate

The tone of the general public seems to be fearful.  Many choose to let the news do the thinking for them and the news sells its stories on potential fear.  Ever hear a tag line for a news program coming up in a few hours?  "Tonight at 8, find out which bottled water manufacturer could be harming you and your family!"  This is how the news has worked for years, and many people I see on a regular basis are afraid.  They are afraid their taxes may increase and that their kids won't be safe at school.

As a responsible gun owner, it is responsibility to educate your friends and family.  I had a conversation a few weeks ago with a coworker about the Sandy Hook tragedy.  Our conversation looked like this:

Her: That guy had a machine gun and he was spraying bullets at that elementary school.

Me: No, machine guns are really hard to get and they cost upwards of $30k.

Her: Really?  I thought he was spraying bullets all over the campus?

Me: No it was a semi automatic rifle, that only fires one bullet per pull of the trigger.  A lot of people actually use that kind of rifle for hunting animals.

Her look showed that of surprise but also understanding.  All she had to go by was the news, and we saw where that went.   Take a few minutes to talk to your non gun owning family and friends and let them know that this AWB really does nothing but punish law abiding citizens.  If we were to compare guns to cars, you could ask why anyone actually needs a vehicle that can drive in excess of 65mph.  Or perhaps has "features" like a spoiler, turbo charger, etc.

So what abou this evil assault weapons ban?  Well I think Feinstein will try, but honestly it won't go anywhere.  This isn't 1994, and if you got some time The Truth About Guns posted an article comparing then and now.  The biggest thing to realize is that we have the Heller case and the 2nd amendment applies to an individual.  Things will be okay, and not to worry magazines and AW's will be back in stock in a few months.  Keep calm and carry on!
