2012 (Trailer): Why?

Want to escape life for a little while by visiting your local cinema?  Well, 2012 is a fun loving family movie about the world coming to an end with John Cusack!

Roland Emmerch is the director of 2012, and this movie looks like it is right in his wheel house.  You may remember his other films that are chock full of CG and effects and lacking on story, such as: 10,000 BC, The Day After Tomorrow, Independence Day, and Gozilla (just to name a few).

The premise for this film surrounds December 21, 2012 a supposed day when the world will end according to a homeless man yelling at the top of his lungs various crappy prophecies.  If you are really curious you can poke around the 2012 wiki entry, but I can tell you right now with 100% certainty the world will not end and this movie will suck.

In 2012 John Cusack is escaping meteors and earthquakes whilst taking his family on vacation in a motor home.  At one point they meet up with government officials and devise a plan (sound oddly reminiscent of Independence Day?).  In the film, the government knew this day was coming and and made these large Noah's Arc/WALL-E stle transportation vehicles.  There is an awful shot of a helicopter lifting a giraffe into one of these boats.

Why was this movie ever green lit to start?  The story sounds weak at best, and if they've already revealed the "Arc" macguffin I wonder what could possibly be left to see.  I'm asking you, as a friend, DO NOT see 2012.  If you are even tempted re-watch an Emmerich classic such as The Day After Tomorrow and I promise 2012 be the exact same story with different actors.

Independence Day kicked ass, but other than that, Emmerich is a clone of Michael Bay: Making movies just for the trailers.

I saw a bunch of footage at the PGA Conference at Sony. Through the whole thing the audience was grunting and groaning, mainly cause its in LA and a little too close to home.

John Cusack does drive his limo through a building as it is falling though.
